Steve & I left Kenai on Friday July 6th. and headed down to Homer. There was a city campground on the Homer Spit. $15 a nite on the water. There is one just as you come on the spit that’s on the ocean side (west side). We found the other farther down on the east side. It faces the Bay & is near a boat launching area and the tourist trap shops. Being on the bay it’s more protected so there was less wind. And the ground is firmer for the weight of the MH.
First pix below was where we parked @ the Moose lodge in Kenai & then heading down the hwy. towards Homer
This is the view as you come into Homer & the beginning of the spit. if you click on the pix you’ll see the first RV parking on the right. As you can see the spit is @ sea level.
They have some nice cleaning tables on the spit for the people that go out fishing.
This is one of the Halibut one of the fishermen brought to clean. And a big trailer dumpster just for the fish scraps. Boy do the seagulls love the bin.
We often saw the Eagles on top of buildings, Sailboat masts, light polls & on top of Tsunami warning towers.
12:23 AM this is the view out the windshield. There was a Holland America cruise ship that came into Homer for a day of touring.
Besides the regular visitor center Homer has a beautiful fairly new bldg. called the Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center. It’s Free and has a lot of interesting exhibits and a couple short films. http://IslandsAndOcean.org And another Eagle pix this is a momma sitting on her nest. It’s up in a tree by the free dump in town.
This Eagle is making a nest in a cell tower. And near the end of the spit attractions there is a small picnic area with this memorial to those lost @ sea.
sunrise 7:41 am & Steve out walking Yoda with his morning cup of coffee.
One afternoon Steve took a 1/2 day trip out in a charter. These don’t go out as far & catch smaller Halibut but even the all day ones aren’t getting as many huge ones & they are pricy. He had a great time & the boat got there limit. He was surprised @ how hard it is to bring in a Halibut plus the 3# weight off the bottom of the ocean.
A seagull taking a mid day bath. And we had 4 Eagles having a midnight snack. We watched then for over an hour took a lot of pix. Steve picked 5 he liked.
A Rainbow over the top of a cleaning station. And a couple of pix of a sunset.
One of the last pix of the MH on the spit we left in the morning & headed to Deep Creek. A stop along the way to Soldotna. We spent 4 nites in Homer & there were a couple places we didn’t see. Saved them for another trip some day. We really enjoyed Homer It isn’t fancy and we weren’t running all around to see a lot of things. Maybe that’s why it was enjoyable. And in thinking back It was a little like Oak Harbor,WA. used to be. By the Ocean & with a bay inlet. & no big super box stores? Oak Harbor is our home town & where Steve was raised. The last 5 pix were taken leaving Homer. The middle pix is one of the many tsunami warning towers along the spit & the Eagles like to rest in them taking in the scenery
As you see some of this post has 2 pix side by side. Just after we left Homer my laptop died. We brought it into a repair shop in Soldotna & we ended up getting a new laptop for me. They were able to save everything. But I now have the new version of Windows Live Writer & it lets me do 3 across. Remember you can click on the pix & see it larger.
